Village Crest at Taylor Village is a 55+ community of 406 condos and townhome-style villas in the 21043 ZIP code of Ellicott City, built in phases starting around 2005. It's on Howard County's list of 55+ communities and it's one of the larger ones on that list.
Most buyers start with the list price, but the number that matters more here is the monthly cost. Village Crest charges fees in layers, and the fee you see on one listing is often only part of the bill. I'm Ryan Breeden with Long & Foster, I've lived in Howard County for 25+ years, and this page covers what I'd want to know before touching a listing here: what the fees add up to, how Hearthstone fits in, what the two community centers offer, and how to line up your sale and your purchase so you aren't paying for two homes.
Prices and fees below are current as of late October 2026.
Village Crest is a community of multi-story condo buildings and townhome-style villas, built between roughly 2005 and 2010. It sits inside Taylor Village, the larger neighborhood around it, which also includes single-family homes and townhouses that aren't age-restricted.
You'll see the same homes called Village Crest at Taylor Village, Hearthstone at Village Crest, Legacy at Village Crest and sometimes just Taylor Village. That's why a Taylor Village search pulls in homes that aren't part of the 55+ community. The map and listings on this page are drawn around Village Crest only.
One of the biggest perks of living here is that you get two community centers, and they're set up for different things.
The Taylor Village Community Center is open to residents of every age in the larger Taylor Village neighborhood. It has an exercise room, three outdoor pools, tennis courts and a playground, which comes in handy when the grandkids visit.
The 55+ clubhouse is private and only for Village Crest residents. It has an indoor pool, a second fitness room and a dance floor, plus a library, a computer lab, a billiards area, a card room and multi-purpose rooms where clubs and groups meet.
The clubhouse is where the social side of the community happens. On-site activities coordinators run painting classes, potluck dinners, holiday parties and themed socials, yoga and water aerobics, informational workshops, wellness events and group day trips. If you want to stay active, pick up a new hobby or meet neighbors without having to try hard, the calendar here makes that easy.
Most homes here carry three layers: two community HOA fees that apply across Village Crest, plus a separate condo fee from the association for your building or section. Sections show them differently, which is why some might show a single $346 fee and another shows $163 and $365. The fee on a listing is rarely the whole picture.
| Fee layer | Typical range | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Community HOA (two associations combined) | About $160 to $175 a month | Applies community-wide |
| Condo fee, condo buildings | About $365 to $395 a month | Varies by building |
| Condo fee, townhome-style villas | About $346 to $458 a month | Varies by section |
| Deferred water and sewer charge | Around $250 a year | Paid to a private water company, not on the county tax bill. Not every home has one |
Add the layers and most condos land around $525 to $570 a month, while villas run about $520 to $630.
Before you fall for a floor plan, find out what each fee covers, whether a special assessment is planned, and whether the condo association has a current reserve study. Each HOA and condo association typically has a community manager we can contact to get direct answers on the fees or anything else you need to know. I'd verify what the fees will be for the specific home before you make an offer, not after.
It also helps to know how the paperwork works. The seller orders the HOA and condo resale package, usually after the contract is signed. A condo buyer has seven days after receiving the condo documents to cancel, and an HOA buyer gets a five-day review period after receiving the resale package.
Hearthstone at Village Crest is one of the sections inside Village Crest. It includes condo buildings and townhome-style villas, and the same fee layers apply as in the table above.
| Home type | Size | Recent price range |
|---|---|---|
| Two-bedroom condos | About 1,330 to 1,660 sq ft | $365,000 to $395,000 |
| Three-bedroom villas | About 3,500 to 3,700 sq ft | $565,000 to $660,000 |
The name doesn't always tell you where a home sits. The same building sometimes shows up as Hearthstone and sometimes as Village Crest at Taylor Village, so ask for the building and the condo association instead of going by the label. Also don't confuse it with Hearthstone at Ellicott Mills, a different 55+ community with its own page.
There are two main types: condos and townhome-style villas. Recent sales as of late October 2026 look like this.
| Home type | Bedrooms | Size | Recent price range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condos | 2 bed, 2 bath | About 1,330 to 1,660 sq ft | $340,000 to $405,000 |
| Villas | 3 to 4 bed | About 2,900 to 4,000+ sq ft | $565,000 to $660,000 |
Homes here don't come up often, so a good one doesn't typically sit long. If you're weighing new against resale, Bethany Glen is a newer 55+ community in Ellicott City where NVHomes prices start around $720,000, above what Village Crest villas have been selling for. Snowden Overlook in Columbia is another 55+ community buyers often compare, and it's typically less expensive than Bethany Glen.
Settle this before you fall for a floor plan, because it decides which homes are realistic for you. Most buyers here are leaving a home they own, and the sale of that home can hopefully pay for the next one. In a low inventory seller's market, an offer that depends on your house selling is more difficult for a seller to accept than a clean one, but it can be done.
You generally have three routes. You can sell first and negotiate time to stay or a short rent-back after settlement. You can buy first with a lender that offers a bridge or home equity option, which costs money and requires qualifying. Or you can make your offer contingent on your sale and accept that it may lose to a cleaner offer in a competitive market. The right one depends on your equity, your loan options and how fast your house is likely to sell.
My background in construction and formal appraisal training helps me show you what your current home would realistically net after repairs (if any are needed) and selling costs, so you know your numbers before you commit. If you're also selling your current home, I can help you coordinate both sales and help you make the transition as smooth as possible with whichever option you choose.
Yes, but the buyer pool is narrower, because every buyer has to qualify under the age rule. Federal law lets a community restrict to older adults when at least 80 percent of its occupied homes have a resident who's 55 or older and the community publishes and follows its age policy. A community that falls below that threshold risks losing its age-restricted status.
Village Crest's own documents set the details, like whether a younger spouse or an adult child can live in the home or inherit it. Get those answers from the community manager before you buy, not when you're selling. Homes do change hands here, and I give clients my read on the market as well as the list-to-sale price for the building they're considering.
Village Crest is in the 21043 ZIP code, reached by Village Crest Drive inside Taylor Village. Historic Ellicott City and Columbia are both a short drive away.
Four major routes are close by: Route 100, Route 29, I-95 and I-70. Routes 100 and 29 make it easy to get around Howard County and over to Columbia, and I-95 and I-70 are your commuting routes toward Baltimore and Washington.
How much are the monthly fees at Village Crest? Add the two community HOA fees to the condo fee and most homes land between about $520 and $630 a month. The fee table on this page breaks down each layer. I help clients verify the exact fee and what it covers with the community manager before they make an offer.
Is Village Crest really 55+, and can a younger spouse or adult child live there? Yes, it's on Howard County's list of 55+ communities. The exact age rules, including who else can live in the home, are in the governing documents, and the community manager can confirm them. Generally, only one spouse needs to be 55 or older at the time of purchase. I'd get that answer before you make an offer.
What's the difference between Village Crest, Hearthstone at Village Crest and Taylor Village? Taylor Village is the larger neighborhood. Village Crest at Taylor Village is the 55+ community inside it, and Hearthstone at Village Crest is one section of Village Crest. None of them is the same as Hearthstone at Ellicott Mills, a separate 55+ community.
What amenities does Village Crest have? Residents have two community centers. The Taylor Village Community Center has an exercise room, three outdoor pools, tennis courts and a playground. The private 55+ clubhouse has an indoor pool, a second fitness room, a dance floor, a library, a computer lab, a billiards area, a card room and rooms for clubs and gatherings.
Should I sell my house first or buy at Village Crest first? Plan the sale first, because it decides which homes are realistic for you. I can run comps on your current home so you can see what it would likely net, then we weigh selling first, a rent-back, a bridge option from your lender or an offer contingent on your sale.
What should I ask before I buy at Village Crest? Ask what each fee covers, whether a special assessment is planned and whether the condo association has a current reserve study. The seller orders the resale package, usually after the contract is signed. A condo buyer has seven days after receiving it to cancel, and an HOA buyer gets a five-day review period. The community manager for each association can answer these directly.
